“Natural guarana” can describe very different raw materials. Seed powder, dry extract and caffeine-standardized extract vary in potency, color, taste and documentation. Unless the approved specification identifies the material and caffeine basis, two production batches can carry the same ingredient name and behave differently.
Define What Standardized Means
State the target caffeine percentage or agreed range, the botanical name and plant part, extraction route where relevant, carrier content and assay method. Calculate both the extract amount and the resulting caffeine contribution per pouch. Avoid quoting guarana milligrams as though every extract delivers the same caffeine.
USP work on a guarana seed monograph family illustrates the use of caffeine and flavonoid tests for botanical characterization. The method and specification used for a commercial ingredient should be confirmed with its supplier and target market.
Ask for a Botanical Document Package
- Certificate of analysis tied to the supplied lot
- Botanical identity and plant-part declaration
- Caffeine assay and analytical method
- Microbiological, heavy-metal and pesticide results as appropriate
- Residual solvent information for extracts
- Allergen, GMO and carrier declarations where required
- Country of origin and re-test or expiry information
Design for Color and Taste
Guarana extracts can add tan color, bitterness and botanical notes. Mint, citrus, tropical fruit and cola-style profiles take different approaches to that base. Samples must use the approved extract lot or a technically equivalent grade. A white flavored blank cannot predict the finished pouch.
Control the Caffeine Statement
If guarana supplies some or all of the caffeine, the label calculation should be based on a controlled assay and manufacturing tolerance. Decide how natural variation is handled and whether supplemental caffeine is permitted. Test the finished product where the specification or market requires confirmation.
Prevent Silent Supplier Changes
Botanical supply can change with harvest, origin and processing. Put substitution rules in writing. A new supplier or standardization range may require sensory work, formula recalculation, label review and stability assessment even if the ingredient name remains guarana extract.
