ODF Mechanical Properties Testing: A Contract Manufacturing Guide

An ODF must be thin enough to disperse as intended and strong enough to survive cutting, transfer, sachet sealing, shipping and opening. A film can pass assay and disintegration tests yet fail commercially because it tears on the line, curls in the package or cracks when handled.

Translate “Flexible” Into Measurements

Thickness, tensile strength, elongation at break and stiffness describe different parts of film behavior. Folding endurance can be a useful development screen, but it should not be treated as interchangeable with instrumented tensile data. Select methods that reflect the formulation and downstream process.

A study comparing ODF folding endurance and tensile properties found that formulation variables and test approaches affect the relationship between these measurements. Buyers should ask for the manufacturer’s actual method and acceptance rationale, not copy a number from another film.

Control the Variables Around the Test

Film moisture, temperature, sample width, cut direction and conditioning time can change the result. Record whether samples run along or across the casting direction. Use consistent specimen preparation and test speed so batch comparisons mean something.

Mechanical Performance Starts in Formulation

Polymer type and level, plasticizer, solids, active loading and residual moisture all influence strength and flexibility. Adjusting one property can affect tack, disintegration or stability. Mechanical work should therefore remain connected to the complete quality target, not optimized alone.

  • Removal from the casting liner
  • Slitting and cutting without edge damage
  • Transfer into the sachet
  • Seal-zone clearance and static behavior
  • Resistance to curl, blocking or sticking
  • Opening and removal by the intended user
  • Condition after transport and stability storage

Write a Practical Specification

Include film dimensions, thickness or mass per area, appearance, relevant tensile or folding test, moisture, disintegration and packaging condition. Define the sampling location across and along the web. Retain packaged units, because loose films in a laboratory envelope do not represent shelf-life handling.
